Community honors fallen hometown hero

MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) -

A funeral service was held for the one-time, falsely imprisoned leader of the Black Panther Party.

However, Geronimo Pratt was remembered in Morgan City this weekend for being more than that.

"He was a man of the people and his whole life was dedicated to helping others and those that appreciated were here," said Jack Pratt, his brother.

Family members said they wanted to hold a public memorial service, so people would know his whole story.

They said he was born a leader and lived his life for others.

"I believe that Gerard was sent into this family and into this world for the purpose which he has succeeded," added Marie Jacqueline Pratt Brown, his sister.

Pratt was a human rights activist until his death on June 2.

That's how his family and friends want to remember him.

Pratt died of complications with malaria and heart failure at his home he shared with his wife and child in Tanzania.
