Orcas softball: Lady Vikings sweep Wolverines for league ...

The lady Vikings rode last week's win to clinch the Northwest 2B/1A league championship over Friday Harbor on Thursday, May 12.

The May 5 injury-interrupted double-header resumed at Buck Park, picking up where they left off: in the bottom of the second inning with Orcas ahead 6-5.

Through a stiff fight the Vikes held onto their slim lead to clinch a 7-6 win, seizing the league championship.

Orcas stepped off strong with a triple by Lana Bronn that sent Lindsay Anderson flying home from first: 7-5.

Pitcher Adria Garcia quickly struck out the Wolverine lineup; and Friday Harbor pitcher Jean Melbourne returned the favor for a scoreless third inning.

In the fourth the Wolverines scored off a sly bunt that cut through Viking defense, bringing the tally to 7-6.

Bullets by Garcia kept Friday Harbor scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Vikings loaded the bases twice, but couldn't quite break through for another score. In the sixth Bruland was on first and Smart on second when the Wolverines made a double play to end the inning.

Fans held their breath in the seventh with Friday Harbor poised in scoring position and two outs, but a Viking catch ended the game with Orcas still in the lead.

Box scores are online.

After the game the Viking seniors each took a victory lap and were carried through a tunnel of players to celebrate their last high school game at Buck Park.

The softball team will play another game on Tuesday, May 17, before they head to districts on May 21. The state softball tournament will be held May 27 and 28.
