Outwitting The Devil - Book Review Outwitting The Devil Napoleon Hill

outwitting the devil

By Napoleon Hill and Annotated by Sharon Lechter (co-author of the Rich Dad Poor Dad book series)

I received a copy of the Outwitting The Devil as a Father?s Day gift. The book is the latest release by the late Napoleon Hill, best know for his 20th century self help classic Think And Grow Rich.

According to the publisher, Napoleon Hill wrote Outwitting The Devil shortly after he completed Think And Grow Rich, but the book was never published because family members and advisors feared it to be ?too controversial?.

In some ways reminiscent of Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch, the premise of Outwitting the Devil is an ?interview? Napoleon Hill conducted with the Devil himself. Much of the content of the book is the transcript of that interview.

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to identify the greatest obstacles we face in reaching personal goals: fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy, as tools of the Devil. These hidden methods of control can lead us to ruin, and Hill reveals the seven principles of good that will allow us to triumph over them and succeed.

There is an intriguing cat and mouse game going on throughout the interview that I found to be quite entertaining and which help make the book an easy and enjoyable read.

Honestly, I found that Sharon Lechter?s annotations added little if any value ? but I suppose that?s a compliment because she avoided the temptation to over editorialize and instead allowed the words of Napoleon Hill (and the Devil) to stand on their own merit. I believe this was a wise decision on her part.

While some of the context and language is dated ? remember the book was written in 1938 ? the seven success principles Hill and The Devil describe are clearly thought out and make sense. They reinforce the principles Napoleon Hill wrote about in his earlier books and which have been written about by many other self help and success authors since then.

Perhaps the idea I found the most intriguing is the ability of the Devil to promote the condition of ?drifting? on the part of 98% of us. When I reflect on what?s been written and look at the successes and failures of my own life, I can see the truth in what Napoleon Hill is saying ? that I?ve been guilty of drifting during each unsuccessful period of my life.

Overall, Outwitting The Devil is an excellent book and I heartily recommend it if you are a fan of Napoleon Hill and/or interested in personal development success principles.
