The rot in sports
GONE is the era when Pakistanis happily began their day with a light- hearted if not always proud look at the sports section of a newspaper. There is plenty of chaos in our sports, and not all of it is due to the current bias for brute power over skill on the playing fields and courts. Pakistani sport is mired in controversy as much because of organisational matters as due to the performance ? or the lack of it ? of the players. After cricket and hockey, it is now the turn of squash. The Pakistan Squash Federation says three top national squash players had deliberately underperformed at the world championship in August this year. The federation has issued footage `to prove` the players threw the matches. The three players were banned recently for between two years and six months and the footage has been shared with the media to consolidate the PSF`s case of wilful underperformance.
