What should you expect from your new school?
Firstly, look for a school that is accredited. Students in beauty schools learn the basic procedures of hair cutting, hair coloring, and styling. A student learns through the lectures, presentations from guest speakers, classroom training with hands on exams and hands on clinic hours. The student may have morning lectures on the Barbering and Cosmetology Act, health and safety, hairstyling, permanent waving and chemical straightening, hair coloring and bleaching, hair cutting, scalp and hair treatments, manicure and pedicures. It is always beneficial for one to talk to clients, graduates, and students. Ask about their satisfaction with services and programs, and also how experienced and qualified instructors are. Spending time at school and with staff and students is a great way to get a feel for the environment and ensure that it is a good fit.
Finally, students should inquire about career placement. What sort of career services are offered? How much hands on time does the program offer to help give students with experience? Look into the success rate of the programs, and whether the school has relationships with local salons and spas for students as well as graduates.
