Add "Minority Report"-like interface to your computer for $80

Did watching "Minority Report" make you fall in love with the idea of interacting with a computer by waving your hands around? Once a small gadget starts shipping on May 13, can do just that. You'll be able to control your Windows or Mac computer by wiggling your fingers, fidgeting with a pen, or otherwise moving your hands around.

The little gadget is called the Leap Motion Controller. Similar to existing 3-D motion-tracking systems ? such as Xbox Kinect, for example ? it captures your movements. The Leap's just significantly more precise, tracking the movements of both hands (and all ten fingers) at up to 290 frames per second. (The device's makers claim that it is even up to 200 times more sensitive than any existing motion-control technologies.) The fact thatit's only about 3 inches long doesn't exactly hurt its sales pitch either. It'll barely take up any space on your desk.

The Leap Motion Controller will support interactions across Windows 7, Windows 8, OS X 10.7 and 10.8. There will also be a variety of apps specifically designed with the Leap Motion Controller in mind. They will live in an app store Leap will operate, called Airspace. Some of the apps already expected include plug-ins for 3-D design software by Autodesk, Corel's Painter apps, various Disney games, "Cut the Rope" and more.

"I believe the Leap is the future of how people will interact with their devices,? Bill Warner, founder of Avid Technology and one of Leap Motion's investors, said in a press release when the company first announced its plans.

?What's previously been an expensive special effect in movies is now an affordable everyday reality, in full 3-D. With [the Leap Motion Controller], you use both hands and all 10 fingers to work within your computer's virtual environment just as easily as you do in the real world.?

Those who pre-order the Leap Motion Controller through either the Leap Motion website or the Best Buy website will see it ship on May 13. On May 19, the device will hit Best Buy stores. And despite all the promise of this little gadget, it will only set you back $80.

(AP) ? Advanced breast cancer has increased slightly among young women, a 34-year analysis suggests. The disease is still uncommon among women younger than 40, and the small change has experts scratching their heads about possible reasons.

The results are potentially worrisome because young women's tumors tend to be more aggressive than older women's, and they're much less likely to get routine screening for the disease.

Still, that doesn't explain why there'd be an increase in advanced cases and the researchers and other experts say more work is needed to find answers.

It's likely that the increase has more than one cause, said Dr. Rebecca Johnson, the study's lead author and medical director of a teen and young adult cancer program at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"The change might be due to some sort of modifiable risk factor, like a lifestyle change" or exposure to some sort of cancer-linked substance, she said.

Johnson said the results translate to about 250 advanced cases diagnosed in women younger than 40 in the mid-1970s versus more than 800 in 2009. During those years, the number of women nationwide in that age range went from about 22 million to closer to 30 million ? an increase that explains part of the study trend "but definitely not all of it," Johnson said.

Other experts said women delaying pregnancy might be a factor, partly because getting pregnant at an older age might cause an already growing tumor to spread more quickly in response to pregnancy hormones.

Obesity and having at least a drink or two daily have both been linked with breast cancer but research is inconclusive on other possible risk factors, including tobacco and chemicals in the environment. Whether any of these explains the slight increase in advanced disease in young women is unknown.

There was no increase in cancer at other stages in young women. There also was no increase in advanced disease among women older than 40.

Overall U.S. breast cancer rates have mostly fallen in more recent years, although there are signs they may have plateaued.

Some 17 years ago, Johnson was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at age 27, and that influenced her career choice to focus on the disease in younger women.

"Young women and their doctors need to understand that it can happen in young women," and get checked if symptoms appear, said Johnson, now 44. "People shouldn't just watch and wait."

The authors reviewed a U.S. government database of cancer cases from 1976 to 2009. They found that among women aged 25 to 39, breast cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body ? advanced disease ? increased from between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 women to about 3 cases per 100,000 during that time span.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

About one in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but only 1 in 173 will develop it by age 40. Risks increase with age and certain gene variations can raise the odds.

Routine screening with mammograms is recommended for older women but not those younger than 40.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the American Cancer Society's deputy chief medical officer, said the results support anecdotal reports but that there's no reason to start screening all younger women since breast cancer is still so uncommon for them.

He said the study "is solid and interesting and certainly does raise questions as to why this is being observed." One of the most likely reasons is probably related to changes in childbearing practices, he said, adding that the trend "is clearly something to be followed."

Dr. Ann Partridge, chair of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advisory committee on breast cancer in young women, agreed but said it's also possible that doctors look harder for advanced disease in younger women than in older patients. More research is needed to make sure the phenomenon is real, said Partridge, director of a program for young women with breast cancer at the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The study shouldn't cause alarm, she said. Still, Partridge said young women should be familiar with their breasts and see the doctor if they notice any lumps or other changes.

Software engineer Stephanie Carson discovered a large breast tumor that had already spread to her lungs; that diagnosis in 2003 was a huge shock.

"I was so clueless," she said. "I was just 29 and that was the last thing on my mind."

Carson, who lives near St. Louis, had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments and she frequently has to try new drugs to keep the cancer at bay.

Because most breast cancer is diagnosed in early stages, there's a misconception that women are treated, and then get on with their lives, Carson said. She and her husband had to abandon hopes of having children, and she's on medical leave from her job.

"It changed the complete course of my life," she said. "But it's still a good life."

Higher levels of several toxic metals found in children with autism

Feb. 25, 2013 ? In a recently published study in the journal Biological Trace Element Research, Arizona State University researchers report that children with autism had higher levels of several toxic metals in their blood and urine compared to typical children. The study involved 55 children with autism ages 5-16 years compared to 44 controls of similar age and gender.

The autism group had significantly higher levels of lead in their red blood cells (+41 percent) and significantly higher urinary levels of lead (+74 percent), thallium (+77 percent), tin (+115 percent), and tungsten (+44 percent). Lead, thallium, tin, and tungsten are toxic metals that can impair brain development and function, and also interfere with the normal functioning of other body organs and systems.

A statistical analysis was conducted to determine if the levels of toxic metals were associated with autism severity, using three different scales of autism severity. It was found that 38-47 percent of the variation of autism severity was associated with the level of several toxic metals, with cadmium and mercury being the most strongly associated.

In the paper about the study, the authors state "We hypothesize that reducing early exposure to toxic metals may help ameliorate symptoms of autism, and treatment to remove toxic metals may reduce symptoms of autism; these hypotheses need further exploration, as there is a growing body of research to support it."

The study was led by James Adams, a President's Professor in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, one of ASU's Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. He directs the ASU Autism/Asperger's Research Program.

Adams previously published a study on the use of DMSA, an FDA-approved medication for removing toxic metals. The open-label study found that DMSA was generally safe and effective at removing some toxic metals. It also found that DMSA therapy improved some symptoms of autism. The biggest improvement was for children with the highest levels of toxic metals in their urine.

Overall, children with autism have higher average levels of several toxic metals, and levels of several toxic metals are strongly associated with variations in the severity of autism for all three of the autism severity scales investigated.

The study was funded by the Autism Research Institute and the Legacy Foundation.

(Makes clear Annett injured in separate incident) Feb 23 (Reuters) - A pile-up at the Daytona speedway on Saturday injured at least 28 fans after a 10-car crash sent car debris, including a tire, flying into the crowd in the final lap of the Nationwide NASCAR race. Race officials said 14 fans were sent to nearby hospitals and another 14 were treated at the Florida track, which will host the prestigious Daytona 500 race on Sunday. "Stuff was flying everywhere," spectator Terry Huckaby, whose brother was sent to the hospital with a leg injury, told the ESPN sports network. ...

Most babies slow to grow catch up by early teens

Feb. 25, 2013 ? New research from the Children of the 90s study at the University of Bristol shows that most babies who are slow to put on weight in the first nine months of life have caught up to within the normal range by the age of 13, but remain lighter and shorter than many of their peers. There are significant differences in the pattern of 'catch-up', depending on the infant's age when the slow weight gain occurs.

The findings, published February 25 in the journal Pediatrics, are based on data from 11,499 participants in Children of the 90s, and provide the most conclusive and reassuring evidence for parents to date that, with the right care, many infants who fail to put on weight quickly in the first nine months of life will catch up over time.

The study found that, of the 11,499 infants born at term, 507 were slow to put on weight before the age of eight weeks ('early group') and 480 were slow to gain weight between eight weeks and nine months ('late group'). Thirty children were common to both groups.

The infants in the early group recovered quickly and had almost caught up in weight by the age of two, whereas those in the later group gained weight slowly until the age of seven, then had a 'spurt' between seven and ten years, but remained considerably shorter and lighter than their peers and those in the early group at the age of 13. At that age, children in the later group were on average 5.5k lighter and almost 4cm shorter than their peers; those in the early group were on average 2.5k lighter and 3.25cm shorter than their peers.

Slow weight gain is often seen by parents and some healthcare professionals as a sign of underlying ill health and clinicians face a dilemma between taking steps to increase a child's energy intake and putting them at risk of obesity later in life by encouraging too rapid weight gain.

The study shows that there were very different patterns of recovery between the early and late groups, even when other factors like the mother's education, background, and her weight and height were taken into account, but that there was little difference between boys and girls.

Professor Alan Emond, Professor of Community Child Health in the University's School of Social and Community Medicine, said: "The reason the early group caught up more quickly may be because those infants had obvious feeding difficulties and were more readily identified at the eight-week check, resulting in early treatment leading to a more rapid recovery. However, as Children of the 90s is an observational study, there is limited information available about which infants received nutritional supplements or medical treatments.

"Those children who showed slow weight gain later in infancy took longer to recover, because of the longer period of slow growth and because their parents were smaller and lighter too.

"Overall, parents can be reassured that well babies showing slow weight gain in the first year do eventually recover to within the normal range, but at 13-years tend to be lighter and smaller than many of their peers.'

The findings highlight the importance of monitoring a baby's weight and height gain during the first few weeks and months, but not creating anxiety with parents of slow-growing babies who are well, as most of these babies will catch up to within the national average over time.

The message to health professionals is that, unless children require intervention due to ill health, their calorie intake should not be increased as this may predispose them to obesity later in life. Feeding habits in the second six months of life determine a child's future weight gain, so consuming too many calories in infancy can lead to weight problems later in life.

Manti Te'o Says There's No Indication Lennay Kekua Hoax Will Hurt His Draft Stock
?

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o told reporters Saturday that he has been given no indication that the Lennay Kekua hoax will hurt his stock in April's draft.

"No, not really," Te'o said during his media session at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "They've told me that they've all just wanted to hear from me what the truth was. They haven't really said anything about it affecting me. ... (One team and I) briefly described it for 30 seconds and the next 14 minutes was about plays and getting down to business."

Te'o said that every team he has interviewed with so far has asked him about the scandal surrounding how he fell in love with a nonexistent woman invented by another man.

"They want to hear it from me," Te'o said. "They want to know what happened."

Te'o didn't get into too many details about the Internet scam, telling reporters that he is "focusing on football and the combine."

Te'o said that he already has met with the Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers and has interviews scheduled with 18 other teams.

Ski. Acosta Wins GS; Lobos Move to Fifth Place at RMISA Championships/NCAA Regionals

Feb. 23, 2013

RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals Results - Day 2 Get Acrobat Reader

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- For the second year in a row, Chris Acosta is an RMISA/NCAA West Regionals champion as the Lobo senior won today's giant slalom event in Bozeman, Mont. Acosta, a native of Ashland, Wisc., won the slalom at last year's Regionals. It's his second victory in 2013 and his third of his career.

The Lobos moved up one spot and sit in fifth after the second day of competition. New Mexico has 523 points and sits ahead of Alaska-Anchorage, who has 477.

Colorado leads all teams with 711 points, Utah is second with 625 and Denver is third with 616. Montana State sits within reach of the Lobos in fourth with 550 points.

"I am very happy for Chris Acosta who had an awesome race today," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said. "It was a little bit better day for the Nordics and we had some other great results for the Alpine team."

Nordic events concluded on Saturday with a 15/20K mass-start freestyle race. The RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals conclude tomorrow with the slalom.

Alpine - Giant Slalom

Acosta propelled a second-place finish by the Lobo men in the giant slalom. UNM's women finished third and collectively, New Mexico was second in the giant slalom.

Michael Bansmer was the Lobos' second point placer as he finished seventh. The sophomore had the fastest time of the field for the second run.

Sean Horner was next and finished 18th. Joonas Rasanen, Mark Miller and Juho-Pekka Penttinen also raced and placed 20th, 21st and 30th, respectively.

Sophomore Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women and earned her first podium finish in RMISA competition as she finished third. Seniors Kate Williams and Mary Rachel Hostetter placed 11th and 18th to round out UNM's scoring.

Freshman Courtney Altringer finished 25th.

Nordic - 15/20K Mass-Start Freestyle

Mats Rudin Resaland led all Nordic Lobos on Saturday as he placed sixth in the men's 20K mass-start freestyle. The sophomore finished the course in 59:21.1.

Junior Christian Otto and senior Eivind Odden Solberg were the other two Lobos that competed. Otto placed 22nd (1:03:07.5) and Solberg finished 27th (1:09:29.6).

Sophomore Clara Chauvet led the Nordic Lobo women with an 11th-place finish, completing the 15K mass-start freestyle in 53:23.9. Senior Linn Havelsrud Klaesson was 14th (54:46.6) and junior Anita Kirvesniemi was 23rd (57:39.3) to round out UNM's scoring. Senior Ingrid Leask finished the course in 1:00:08.2 and placed 26th.

"Mats had a real shot at the podium but fell one kilometer from the finish," Landstedt said. "Clara finished in ninth but got a 15 second penalty for skiing out of the trail for a few yards and was moved down to 11th. She skied a good race, and Linn also had a better race today."

Dana White says he?d support a gay male fighter and would ?fix? any potential discrimination

ANAHEIM, Calif. ? When she steps into the cage at UFC 157 this weekend, Liz Carmouche will be the first openly gay fighter in the UFC.

To date, no male UFC fighter has come out of the closet. UFC president Dana White, however, said he knows how he will react ?not only if a male fighter comes out, but also if his opponent would threaten to refuse a fight against a gay athlete.

"Most of the guys that are in this sport are really good people," White said during Friday's question and answer session. "I honestly don't see a situation where that would happen, but if it did, I'd fix it."

White has been criticized by gay groups in the past for using homophobic language, which he discussed.

"Some of our guys, and I have said some things that make it look like we're homophobes," White said. "But we're not, and we've apologized."

No active athletes in in the four major sports have come out of the closet. Some athletes, like the NBA's John Amaechi, came out after retirement.

It appears, however, that attitudes are changing in the athletic world. Just this week, NFL quarterback Tim Tebow pulled out of a speaking engagement at a church led by an anti-gay pastor.

What Did Obama and Tiger Woods Talk About During Their Top Secret Golf Game?

The White House Press Pool made a stink on Sunday after they were refused access to President Obama's golf game with Tiger Woods in Florida. Obama's in the Sunshine State for three days while his wife and daughters are skiing in Colorado, and he must've signed up for the premium package because he took the course with the world's second best player in what one sports pundit called a "historic day in golf." Obama's never played golf with Tiger Woods before, so the two titans probably had a lot of catching up to do. But we'll never know what they said, since the White House insisted upon locking the press out of the resort.?

RELATED: NPR at Odds with the White House on Bin Laden Death Photo

It's not like Obama snubbed reporters after a visit with a foreign head of state or anything, but the press pool was upset on principal. "Speaking on behalf of the White House Correspondents Association, I can say a broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the president of the United States this entire weekend," said Ed Henry, president of the White House Correspondents Association. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."

RELATED: Birthers Sue Esquire for $120 Million Over Satirical Article

Burn. Just three days ago Obama boldly declared that his administration is "the most transparent in history." That was read as a pretty dicey claim, especially after we just got finished learning about just how secretive the Obama administration has been about its drone program, despite calls from lawmakers and transparency advocates alike to share the rules of engagement with the public. Obama didn't just make up that "most transparent in history" line, either. It's the same one he used his very first day in office, when he promised "an unprecedented level of openness." A few years into his first administration, many had their doubts about whether or not the president kept that promise.

RELATED: The World Considers the Racist Obama Chimpanzee Email

So this isn't really about not getting to take a picture of Obama bumping fists with Tiger. (In fact, there were no photos of the outing made available at the time of this writing ? the picture above is from one of the president's outings last year.) Nor is it about concocting some conspiracy theory about how the other two men in the game,?U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, were whipping up some top secret espionage plans. They were probably all just talking about their fantasy basketball teams and trying to figure out a tasteful way to ask Tiger about his sex addiction. Or whatever it is masters of the universe talk about when playing golf.

Brain prostheses create a sense of touch: Infrared signaling could create sense of touch in artificial limbs

Feb. 16, 2013 ? Rats can't usually see infrared light, but they have "touched" it in a Duke University lab.

The rats sensed the light as a sensation of touch after Duke neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis and his team fitted the animals with an infrared detector wired to electrodes implanted in the part of the mammalian brain that processes information related to the sense of touch.

One of the main flaws of current human, brain-controlled prosthetics is that patients cannot sense the texture of what they touch, Nicolelis said. His goal is to give quadriplegics not only the ability to move their limbs again, but also to sense the texture of objects placed in their hands or experience the nuances of the terrain under their feet.

His lab studies how to connect brain cells with external electrodes for brain-machine interfaces and neural prosthetics in human patients and non-human primates, giving them the ability to control limbs, both real and virtual, using only their minds. He and his team have shown that monkeys, without moving any part of their real bodies, could use their electrical brain activity to guide the virtual hands of an avatar to touch virtual objects and recognize their simulated textures.

His latest study, published Feb. 12 in Nature Communications, shows that the rats' cortexes respond both to the simulated sense of touch created by the infrared light sensors and to whisker touch, as if the cortex is dividing itself evenly so that the brain cells process both types of information.

This plasticity of the brain counters the current "optogenetic" approach to brain stimulation, which suggests that a particular neuronal cell type should be stimulated to generate a desired neurological function. Instead, stimulating a broader range of cell types might help a cortical region adapt to new sensory sources, Nicolelis said.

His team recently documented the firing patterns of nearly 2,000 individual, interconnected neurons in monkeys. Recording the electrical activity from thousands of neurons at once is important for improving the accuracy and performance of neuroprosthetic devices, he said.

This brain-machine interface work is all part of an international effort called the Walk Again Project to build a whole-body exoskeleton that could help paralyzed people regain motor and sensory abilities using brain activity to control the apparatus. He and his collaborators expect to first use the exoskeleton in the opening ceremony of the FIFA Soccer World Cup in June 2014.

Nicolelis said infrared sensing might be built into such an exoskeleton so patients wearing the suit could have sensory information about where their limbs are and how objects feel when they touch them.

Nicolelis is a professor of neurobiology, biomedical engineering and psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. He is also founder of Duke's Center for Neuroengineering. He earned his M.D. from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Biomedical Science at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
