FAA fines airline involved in 2009 crash

By msnbc.com news services

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a $153,000 fine against Colgan Air for operating more than a dozen flights without giving pilots and flight attendants a required break between shifts.

The regional carrier, which is owned by Pinnacle Airlines, was involved in the Feb. 12, 2009, crash near Buffalo that killed 50 people.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the crash was the result of pilot error. Though both pilots onboard the flight had schedules within FAA requirements, the NTSB warned that fatigue likely played a factor in their decision-making. (See the full report. PDF)

The FAA cited 17 flights operated between June 2008 and February 2009 on which two captains, two first officers and six flight attendants worked even though they had been on duty for the previous six consecutive days. The FAA requires that flight crew members get a 24-hour break during seven consecutive calendar days of work.

Joe Williams, a spokesman for the airline, said Colgan "complied with all applicable duty and rest rules and will respond accordingly" to the proposed fine, according to the Associated Press.

"We have worked closely with the FAA as we have revised our safety programs and have invested heavily above and beyond FAA requirements on both personnel and resources to facilitate new programs," Williams told the AP. "Colgan remains in compliance with these requirements."

Information from the Associated Press was included in this report.

Ex-UK police boss: Terrorism trumped phone hacking

LONDON (AP) ? The official who oversaw the much-criticized initial police inquiry into Britain's phone hacking scandal says a crush of terrorism cases meant his force had no choice but to curtail the investigation.

Former Scotland Yard counterterrorism chief Peter Clarke testified Thursday that police were so badly stretched by the threat of al-Qaida attacks in 2005 that the London force had to enlist 1,000 officers from elsewhere. In that context, he said, the investigation into phone hacking by journalists had to take the back seat.

"Invasions of privacy are odious, and sometimes illegal, but to put it bluntly they don't kill you," he said. "Terrorists do."

The London transit system was hit by bomb attacks on July 7, 2005, that killed 52 commuters.

Clarke spoke at Britain's official inquiry into media ethics, which was set up by Prime Minister David Cameron after widespread phone hacking was discovered at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid.

The paper spent years breaking into the phones of people, famous or not, to get front-page scoops. Murdoch shut down the tabloid in July after advertisers and readers were outraged.

The initial U.K. police investigation into the phone hacking scandal uncovered thousands of pages of evidence suggesting that several senior journalists at the now-defunct tabloid had ordered private detective Glenn Mulcaire to hack into phones of hundreds of victims. Those victims included members of the royal household, then-Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and other high-level figures.

But Scotland Yard failed to follow leads, interview suspects or notify the victims, closing its investigation with the conviction of Mulcaire and only one journalist, The News of the World's royal correspondent, Clive Goodman.

Clarke said part of the problem was that Murdoch's News International, the paper's publisher, had stonewalled investigators. Clarke rejected allegations that his police force had helped Murdoch's company cover up its crimes.

But he acknowledged overlooking details "which, with hindsight, were very important."

Clarke said, given the huge number of terror cases the force was dealing with, he stood by his decision not to pursue the initial phone-hacking investigation any further.

"I haven't seen anything that would cause me to take a different decision than I took then," he said.

In a separate development, police said Thursday they have arrested a 32-year-old woman as part of their investigation into U.K. media misdeeds. News International's corporate affairs office said it had no immediate information on the arrest, but a person briefed on the investigation identified the woman as Virginia Wheeler, The Sun newspaper's defense correspondent.

The person said Wheeler had been abroad but had agreed to present herself to police on her return. He spoke anonymously because he wasn't authorized to give details about a police inquiry. Scotland Yard said the suspect was later out on bail.

The arrest is the 23rd in its investigation into allegations that British police and other public officials ? including members of the military ? were bribed for information by journalists. The investigation is running parallel to investigations into phone hacking and computer hacking.

Wheeler is one of several senior Sun journalists to be arrested in recent weeks.

Kinda Sketchy | Searching For Green Cleaning Methods Is Not Hard ...

When you think about doing home improvements, the list is usually long. The beginning of any home improvement should be a thorough cleaning, if you really want to raise its value. You think you are doing something good for your home when you clean it, but if you are using traditional cleaners, you are filling your home?s structure and air with harmful chemicals.

There are methods for improving your home that are better than others, and one of the best is turning to green products for cleaning. Some of the methods of green cleaning that you learn about in this article, can add to your home?s value.

It is not necessary to use ammonia-based cleansers when cleaning mirrors and windows. Knowing this information is not what the Windex Corp wants you to know. Any ammonia that gets in your lungs can actually harm them. Without a doubt, your health, and life, is much more important than whether or not your windows are clear and spotless. To do green cleaning, and have clean windows, you need to know a few things. As a substitute, you can go green using water and lemon juice instead. By mixing half a gallon of water with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, you will have a green solution. Mix it extremely well. Just put it in a convenient spray bottle and clean your windows and mirrors. Never use paper towels! Wipe the lemon juice off, instead, with a cotton rag. This is much more environmentally en vogue than using paper towels. This technique is not merely for the sake of being green but also for saving my sonogram technician salary from spending for paper towels.

Instead of using a dryer, start hang drying your clothing. The option isn?t always there to hang dry your laundry, so during the winter months it is nice to have a dryer. They will increase your carbon footprint, because of the required electricity. Not only is a dryer hard on the environment, no matter if it is gas or electric, but static electricity is increased by using it, especially in the winter. The environment isn?t the only beneficiary when you choose to hang dry your laundry. When you are drying your clothing in a hot dryer all of the time, they will wear out much quicker because of all the banging around. For more tips about organic cleaning, you can look up ultrasound tech living.

Adding houseplants are the best form of green living you can get. The environment is enlivened with plants, but that is not all. An air filter cleans particles out of the air, and that is what plants do. Some people use fake plants made out of rubber, which don?t do much good, but an actual rubber plant will, along with English Ivy, peace lilies and spider plants, because of their cleansing properties. Oxygen is released from these plants, after they take the toxins out of the air. For an 1800 square foot house you?ll want at least a dozen though a dozen and a half would be better. When you are thinking about buying an air purifier, get some plants instead, because they do a better job. Some ultrasound technician schools online I?d frequented before used all-natural based cleaning products, and you can actually like how pleasant it smell. When you spend your time cleaning, it will be more profitable if you do the job the right way. Before you choose any home improvement project, start with a thorough cleaning. When you get in the habit of cleaning your home with green cleaning methods, your whole house will be refreshed, and you will too.

HTC One car dock and app the best vehicle experience yet

We snagged a few minutes with the all-new car dock app on the HTC One series phones. Let's not beat around the bush here -- it's easily the best car app we've seen on an Android smartphone, bar none.

You start off with our favorte feature -- a plugless dock. There are four connecting pins on the back of the phone that hook things up to the dock without having to fumble with a plug. If you've never used a dock like that before, it takes all of the guesswork out of it -- and that's a must while driving.

Once you're connected, the car app automatically launches. Within the app, you've got a cube motif -- not unlike what you might see in an Android launcher, actually. With it, you can easily swipe between navigation, your contacts list and phone, the music app, Tune-in Radio (which is included) -- and, as HTC told us, other third-part apps shoud work with it out of the box as well. But HTC's own apps are so well-done that you might hesitate to use something else. The buttons are large and extremely easy to see and press -- just about the best we've seen. The UI is bright and clear of distraction. Audio will stream to your car stereo via Bluetooth. Don't have Bluetooth? No worries. A dongle that plugs into your aux port will take care of that.

Check out the video of it in action after the break. As of now, our only real question is this: When can we get it?
